Phalaenopsis (Phalaenopsis spp.) is one of the popular ornamental plants in the Orchidaceae family, which is named after its flowers that resemble fluttering butterflies. Different colors of Phalaenopsis orchids not only give people rich enjoyment visually, but also give people a lot of pleasure.


Phalaenopsis is a kind of orchid, and its scientific name Phalaenopsis is composed of the Greek words phala (moth) and osis (model), which means “butterfly-like orchid”, and its flower shape also resembles a butterfly fluttering.


Phalaenopsis orchid is considered to be one of the easier to maintain varieties in the orchid family, because of its long flowering period, many varieties, simple maintenance, loved by the majority of florists!

Phalaenopsis orchids can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, so breeding them indoors can not only be ornamental, but also help to improve air quality and create a fresh living space.

Conservation methods:

1. Light

  • Moderate light: Phalaenopsis orchids prefer a warm environment and diffused light, and do not tolerate strong direct light. Therefore, it is best to place them in a place with bright indirect light, such as near a window but covered by curtains. Avoid strong direct sunlight or you will easily burn the leaves.
  • Judging Light: Dark green leaves indicate insufficient light, while yellowish green may indicate too much light. Pay attention to the state of the leaves to adjust the light conditions.

2. Temperature

  • Warm environment: Phalaenopsis is suitable for temperatures of 20-30℃, especially during the day. Keeping the temperature around 15-20℃ at night will help promote flowering. Avoid sudden changes in temperature, especially in winter, and take care to keep it warm.

3. Humidity

  • Keep humid: Phalaenopsis likes moist environment, the ideal air humidity is 50%-70%. The air can be humidified by spraying water during dry seasons, especially in winter when there are heating devices. However, avoid spraying water directly onto the flowers to avoid triggering flower rot.

4. Watering

  • Moderate watering: Phalaenopsis has a fragile root system and should not be over-watered. In general, water once a week to keep the substrate moist but not too wet. In summer, when the temperature is high and evaporation is fast, watering frequency can be increased; in winter, watering frequency can be reduced accordingly. When watering, make sure the water can completely run out of the bottom of the pot to avoid waterlogging.
    Observe the root system: Phalaenopsis roots are usually silvery gray or green. If the roots turn brown, it may be due to root rot caused by stagnant water and watering should be reduced immediately.

5. Fertilizing

  • Moderate fertilization: Phalaenopsis orchids need moderate fertilization during the growing period, usually apply diluted orchid-specific fertilizer every 2-3 weeks. The concentration of fertilizer should not be too high to avoid burning the root system. Reduce the amount of fertilizer during the flowering period and stop fertilizing during the dormant period.
